Daniel Steinbock was born and raised on the California coast north of the Golden Gate, the only child of a sailor and a librarian. Days spent at sea and in the company of dead poets forged a young singer-songwriter in the sublime lyrical tradition of Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) and Neil Young. Pre-apocalyptic love songs and spare folk poems fill his song book with a rare spiritual nakedness: he conjures plights and ecstasies of soul and body that might have come from the pen of Walt Whitman, had Whitman left New York and wandered the American landscape through tent revival spirituals and Delta freedom songs to grow quiet and haikuist at the feet of giant California Redwoods.
“Out of Blue is a soft-hearted, introspective look at enveloping love that is uncontrollably honest and surreal.”
– No Depression, Journal of Roots Music
Steinbock’s first full-length album, Out of Blue, was recorded live in the 100 year-old OK Theatre in Eastern Oregon by Bart Budwig, and has received advance critical praise. Americana UK says “the Californian-native has developed a distinctive sound… One of the record’s strengths is Steinbock’s consistently soothing, soulful vocal… All-encompassing love is sung about as an almost-spiritual experience, implied by multiple religious and Biblical references scattered throughout the songs.” Title track “Out of Blue” was KUTX’s Song of the Day. Single “13 September” is featured by Spotify’s editorial board on Front Porch alongside Gillian Welch, The Milk Carton Kids, Langhorne Slim and The Tallest Man On Earth.
Out of Blue presents the songwriter’s craft in full spectrum, painting with colors of rock n’ roll, jazz, gospel-soul, country, and blues, with features by fellow troubadours John Craigie, Ayla Nereo, and Rainbow Girls. Previously, he has released two EPs, Sea Inside and The Blade.
Out of Blue released February 15, 2019 and is now available on music platforms worldwide.
